Dorothy S. Taylor

Dorothy Starr Taylor, 91, Roan Mountain, passed away Wednesday, September 09, 2009 at Roan Highlands Nursing Home. A native of Johnson City, she was a daughter of the late James M. Starr and Buena Hale Brumit. Mrs. Taylor was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank A. Taylor, Jr. A beloved wife, mother and friend to many, she is survived by two daughters, Dorothy S. Savasky and husband, Jack, North Port, Florida, Rebecca A. Taylor and husband, Gary Guritz, Papillion, Nebraska; two sons, Frank A. Taylor, III and wife, Sharon, Newland, North Carolina, Christopher D. Taylor and wife, Mary, Miami, FL; brother, James Starr and wife, Norma, Johnson City; niece, Tracy Honeycutt; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A visitation for Mrs. Taylor will be conducted from 1:30 until 2:30 PM Friday, September 11, 2009 from the East Parlor of Appalachian Funeral Home. A private graveside will be conducted at Monte Vista Memorial Park. For those who prefer, memorial donations may be made to Roan Highlands Nursing Center, 146 Buck Creek Road, Roan Mountain, TN 37687, in memory of Mrs. Taylor.


Carroll S. Jones

Carroll S. Jones, 73, Johnson City, died peacefully Monday, September 7, 2009 at James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center following a lengthy illness. A native of Unicoi County, Tennessee, he was a son of the late Elzie and Arra Lee Rowe Jones. Mr. Jones retired from General Motors following 30 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Norma Faye Harmon. Survivors include his daughters, Mary Lee Garner, Taylor Mill, Kentucky, Carol Etta Brookshier, Ypsilanti, Michigan, Phyllis Iva Martin, Georgetown, KY; son, Raymond Carter, Independence, KY; sisters, Mary Sue Santoro, Ohio, Louise Robb, Michigan, Alice Blevins, North Carolina; brother, Clinton Jones, Johnson City; long-time companion, Beverly Harmon, Johnson City; 6 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mr. Jones will be conducted at 2:00 PM Thursday, September 10, 2009 from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Washington County Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM until service time Thursday in the East Parlor of the funeral home or at other times at the home of his brother, Clinton Jones, 1830 W. Lakeview Drive. Jay McCurry

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. II Timothy 4:7 

   Jay McCurry, 88, of Unicoi, died Monday, August 17, 2009 at his residence. He was a native of Yancey County, North Carolina and a son of the late Georgie McCurry Garland and step-father, Valle Garland. Mr. McCurry was a Veteran of World War II and employed by General Shale for 39 years retiring in 1984. He was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church, Johnson City. He served as a deacon, Sunday School Superintendant and Sunday school teacher. Our Dad enjoyed reliving his days as a supervisor at General Shale. He spoke often of the men he worked with and told many stories of how they made brick. He lived his life for Christ and his family and friends are comforted by knowing he is now living with his Savior. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and James McCurry.    Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Ruth Ayers McCurry; children, Jawina Fagan, Johnson City, Gail Hicks and husband, Bill, Terry McCurry, all of Unicoi, Gary McCurry and wife, Cindy, all of Jonesborough, Danny McCurry and wife, Sabrina, Erwin; sisters, Francis Ayers, Johnson City, June Britt, Knoxville; step-brother, Harold Garland, Johnson City; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; two special cousins, Mosie Laws, Hickory, North Carolina and Milton Laws, Bakersville, NC and several nieces and nephew. The funeral service for Mr. McCurry will be conducted at 8:00 PM Wednesday, August 19, 2009 from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Pastors Tony Trott and Kenneth Grindstaff officiating. Graveside interment will be conducted at 12:00 PM Thursday, August 20, 2009 at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Scott Kenny, Billy Hicks, Allen McCoy, Jon McCurry, Todd Fagan, Ben McCurry and Jay Thomas McCurry. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home by 11:30 AM Thursday to travel in procession to the cemetery. Charles Edward Leonard

Charles Edward Leonard, 68, 1224 Huffine Road, Johnson City, went to be with our Heavenly Father on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at Johnson City Medical Center, after a 3 year battle with multiple Myeloma. A native of Johnson City, he was a son of the late Clyde Delmas and Pearl Huffine Leonard. Mr. Leonard was an active member of Antioch Baptist Church serving as deacon, member of the choir and led Jr. Boys Royal Ambassadors. He retired 5 years ago after having worked for 39 years for Pet Dairy. Mr. Leonard was a Veteran of the U. S. Army. He dearly loved and enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his three grandchildren, Austin, Jacie and Ethan. Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 46 years, Betty Hughes Leonard, of the home; sons, Michael T. Leonard and wife, Christie, Johnson City and Gregory C. Leonard and wife, Misty, Jonesborough; sister, Carolyn Taylor and husband, Sam, Johnson City; brother, James D. Leonard and wife, Glenna, Blountville; grandchildren, Austin, Jacie and Ethan Leonard and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mr. Leonard will be conducted at 8:00 PM Thursday, August 13, 2009 from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Rev. Kenneth Kyker and Rev. Sherrel Nave officiating. The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday, August 14, 2009 at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Grace J. Mauk

Grace J. Mauk, 92, died Saturday, July, 25, 2009, at Christian Care Center of Johnson City. She was a former resident of the South Central Community, and a daughter of the late Austin A. and Betty Julian. She was a former teacher in Washington Co. and worked for the government during WWII in California. Mrs. Mauk was a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, having served as a Sunday school teacher and on several committees. She was preceded in death by her husband William J. Mauk, five sisters and three brothers. Survivors include one brother, Austin Julian Jr. of Ogden ,UT, and several nieces and nephews. The graveside service for Mrs. Mauk will be conducted Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at 3:00 PM at Liberty Church Cemetery of the South Central Community. Those wishing to attend are requested to meet at the cemetery by 2:50 PM on Tues. No formal visitation will be held as friends may visit the funeral home on Tuesday from 10AM to 2PM. Bill J. Starnes

Bill J. Starnes, age 79, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 25, 2009.  Mr. Starnes was a committed Christian who loved both his faith and his family dearly. Mr. Starnes was born on June 21, 1930 in Johnson City, TN to Ruth and W.W. Starnes, both now deceased.  He had one brother, Mr. Ted E. Starnes of Jacksonville, Florida, who is deceased. Mr. Starnes was a veteran of the US Navy, serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Siboney as part of the carrier’s airwing, from 1947 to 1950.  Upon completion of naval service, Mr. Starnes returned to Johnson City to begin his career and to attend East Tennessee State University, graduating in 1956 with an undergraduate degree in Industrial Arts.  Mr. Starnes was also a 1967 graduate of the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Planning in Knoxville. Upon graduation from UT-Knoxville, Mr. Starnes held several positions in municipal and state government.  He was Director of City Planning for Huntsville, Alabama from 1967 until 1972, and participated in directing the planning, design, and major growth of the city around the NASA space programs of the 60’s and early 70’s, as the city is located near NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.  He left this position in late 1972 to become Director of the Office of State Planning and Federal Programs in Montgomery, Alabama and held that position until his retirement from civil service.  Under his leadership there, he is credited with laying much of the groundwork for the State of Alabama’s success in both international trade and statewide economic development, which continues to be very successful to this day.  Upon retiring back to the Johnson City area in late 1992, Mr. Starnes stayed active with hobbies such as woodworking, reading, and the design and construction of a new house on Herron Drive in Sullivan County.  He also extended his career, serving as a professor at Northeast State Technical College, teaching part-time in the fields of drafting and computer-aided design. Mr. Starnes was married to the former Betty Jean George of Johnson City, and recently celebrated 57 years of marriage on April 7.  He has one son, Mr. Keith W. Starnes of Birmingham, AL, who is an architect with Gresham, Smith & Partners, and is married to the former Katharine Simons of Kingsport, TN.  He has two wonderful grand-daughters, Audrey and Olivia Starnes.  His family will miss him dearly, but we are happy and secure in the knowledge that he is now with his heavenly father, and a host of friends and family members who have gone on before. The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the Sullivan County EMT personnel and the entire staff at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN for their care and responsiveness for Mr. Starnes. The graveside funeral service for Mr. Starnes will be conducted Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at 2:30PM in Monte Vista Cemetery with Rev. Al South officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1-2PM in the East Parlor of Appalachian Funeral Home.


Sara L. Doak

Sara Lois Dent Doak, 93, Johnson City, passed away Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, she was a daughter of the late Margaret Hord and Frank Robert Dent, Sr. Mrs. Doak was a member of First Presbyterian Church since 1947, where she was a member of the Ann King Bible Class. She was also a member of The Monday Club and the D. A. R. Mrs. Doak was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Kitzmiller Doak. Survivors include her daughters, Margaret Henderson and husband, Tracy, Asheville, North Carolina, Jane Mainzer and husband, Peter, Powell, Ohio; brother, Frank Robert Dent and wife, Frances, Burlington, NC; grandchildren, Mark Price, Carrboro, NC, Kelly Stone, Durham, NC, Mary Myers-Carey and husband, William and Wes Myers, all of Powell, OH; great-grandson, Sam Stone, Durham, NC; four nieces and one nephew. The funeral service for Mrs. Doak will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday, July 25, 2009 in the Wood Chapel of First Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Walter C. Paul

Walter C. Paul, 47, Jonesborough, passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at John Reed Nursing Home. A native of Johnson City, he was a son of Mildred Paul and the late Ernest Paul. Mr. Paul had worked at TPI Corporation and later worked at Ramey Ford and Food City in Boones Creek. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by brothers, Ernest “Chip” Paul and Kenneth Paul. Survivors include his wife, Christie Michelle Paul; children, Amber Michelle, Andrew Walter and Ashley Michelle Paul; brothers, David, Ricky and Richard Paul, all of Johnson City, several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mr. Paul will be conducted at 1:00 PM Friday, July 24, 2009 from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Greer officiating. Interment will follow at Washington County Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:00 – 1:00 PM Friday in the East Parlor of the funeral home.


Billy Ray Mumpower

Billy Ray Mumpower, 64, Johnson City, passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. A native of Bristol, Virginia, he was a son of the late Lizzie Canter and Joe Mumpower, Sr. Mr. Mumpower was a painter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Survivors include his ex-wife and special friend, Tina Mumpower, Johnson City; five sisters and four brothers. The graveside service for Mr. Mumpower will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday, July 24, 2009 at Roselawn Memory Gardens, Johnson City, TN. 


Rev. Eugene Swartz

Rev. Eugene Swartz, 75, Jonesborough, passed away Sunday, July 19, 2009 at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center following a brief illness. A native of Johnson City, he was a son of the late Don and Maude Barnett Swartz. Rev. Swartz was a preacher at Zion Church of Jesus in Unicoi. He was Veteran of the United States Navy. Rev. Swartz owned and operated a tire store. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Swartz. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Betty Saylor Swartz, of the home; daughters, Evelyn Hale, Johnson City, Patricia Higgins, Jonesborough, Karen Hawkins and husband, Chris, Watauga, Texas; son, Gary Swartz and wife, Valerie, Gray; grandchildren, Meghan Swartz, Garrick Swartz, J. J. Swartz, Toria Hale, Perry Higgins, Lauren Higgins, Brianna Hawkins, Ciera Hawkins, Matthew Whitson, Sarah Whitson; great-grandchildren, J’Michael Hale, Zayden Hale, Jayshan Swartz; brother, J. D. Larry R. Schwartz

Larry R. Schwartz, 84, 1502 Merrywood Drive, Johnson City, passed away Sunday, July 19, 2009 at Johnson City Medical Center following a lengthy illness. A native of Marion, Virginia, he was a son of the late George and Nellie Schorts Schwartz. Mr. Schwartz was a member of Union Church of Christ. He was a member of the Johnson City VFW Post 2108. He retired after 32 years as an electrician from Holston Defense. Mr. Schwartz served in the United States Army Signal Corp and was one of many who landed on the beaches of Normandy. He received a Bronze Star for capturing a German spy. Mr. Schwartz was a great husband, father, brother and friend to all. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Katherine Brumit Schwartz; daughter, Rhonda Ann Schwartz; sister, Mildred Goodpasture and brothers, Richard Eugene Schwartz and Charles Schwartz. Survivors include his wife, Earlene Harvey Schwartz, of the home; daughters, Kathy McCorkle and husband, Fred, Gray, Laren McGhee, Charlotte, North Carolina; sons, Larry Schwartz, II and wife, Vickie, Dallas, Georgia, Charles “Chuck” Schwartz and wife, Daphne, Nashville; grandson, Larry “Tres” Schwartz, III and wife, Rhianna; great-grandson, Larry Schwartz, IV; brother, Wilbert Schwartz and wife, Dolores, Johnson City and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mr. Schwartz will be conducted at 12:00 PM Wednesday, July 22, 2009 from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Mr. Jim Franklin, Minister officiating. Graveside interment will follow at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Aaron Christopher Ledford

Aaron Christopher Ledford, age 25, of Knoxville, TN was called home by his lord and savior on Tuesday, July 14, 2009. Born May 31, 1984 he passed away at the UT Medical Center from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Knoxville Tennessee. Aaron proudly served his country with the United States Marine Corps, 3rd Battalion 6th Marines Lima Company in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom where he received the Combat Action Ribbon, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, National Defence Service Medal, Rifle Marksman Qualification Badge and Good Conduct Medal. He achieved the rank of Lance Corpral and was Honarably Discharged on October 19th, 2005. He was a native of Washington County Tennessee and was residing in Knoxville Tn, with his Fiancee Amy Jelley at the time of his death. Aaron enjoyed Fishing, Hiking, Camping, Bowling,UT Vols Football, riding his Harley Davidson Motorcycle and tasting life with his soul mate, Fiancée and love of his life Amy Jelley. He also cherished his three dogs, Lexie, Charlie Brown and Pepper. He was a cheerful, loving young man who touched the heart of everyone who met him. He always had a smile on his face and made the most of the life he lived. Aaron was an organ donor and gave to others even in his death. He is preceded in death by his mother Betty Sue Ledford, grandmother Opal B Williams, Grandmother Helen Ledford, Grandfather Charles Ledford, and Great Grandmother Nannie M  Byers. He leaves to cherish his memories his fiancée; Amy Jelley, Father; Christopher Lynn Ledford, Step Mother; Sue Ellen Ledford, Sister; Audrey Ledford, Step Sister; Allyson Oquendo, Step Brother Andrew Oquendo, Grandfather; Verges Williams, Future In-laws Ron and Theresa Jelley, Uncle Chil Ledford, Aunt Sharon Ledford, Aunt Charlene Ledford, Aunt Dora Ledford, Uncle Ed Estep, Aunt Nancy Estep, Uncle Wesley Williams, Aunt Sarae Williams, Uncle Randy Williams, Aunt Pattie Williams, Uncle Roger Williams, dozens of cousins, nieces and nephews and to many friends to mention.

The funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M.  Tuesday, July 21, 2009 in the chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home.  The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 2:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of Appalachian Funeral Home.  The graveside service and interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Snapps Ferry Road in Greenville Tn. He will be laid to rest on his mother’s right hand side.  Active Pallbearers will be: Bob Miller, Mathew Honeycutt, Andrew Oquendo, Ed Estep, Ron Jelley, Brandon Jelley, Jason Stillings and Fred R. Edens Jr. Honorary Pallbearers are Chil Ledford, James Williams, Wesley Williams, Randy Williams and Roger Williams. Aaron will receive full Military Honors by the United States Marine Corps. To those who desire, memorials may be made  to the American Cancer Society, 501 Princeton Rd., Ste. 102, Johnson City, TN  37601, in honor of his mother. 

 


 

Rosalie Young Alexander

Rosalie Young Alexander, age 82, of Johnson City, passed away Thursday, July 16, 2009 at Christian Care Center. A native of Johnson City, she was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Hazel Young; her husband, L. D. Alexander, Jr.; one brother, R. C. Young and one sister, Ruth Young Love. Mrs. Alexander was a loyal, lifetime member of Unaka Avenue Church of Christ. Survivors include a step-son, Glenn Alexander and wife, Linda; grandson, Brian Alexander; sister, Doris Shell; special niece and caretaker, Michelle Lyons and husband, David and several nieces and nephews.   The funeral service for Mrs. Alexander will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday, July 18, 2009 from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Mr. Lamar Garrison, Minister officiating. Music will be provided by Phoebe-Jo Garrison. Interment will follow at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Brian Alexander, Mickey James, Eric James, David Lyons and Glenn Alexander. Eleanor Jones Carriger

Eleanor Jones Carriger passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at the Lakebridge Health Care Center following a brief illness. Mrs. Carriger was a lifelong resident of Johnson City, TN. She was the daughter of the late Georgia Williams and Roy W Jones. She was a graduate of Science Hill high School and the University of Tennessee. Mrs. Carriger was a Passap knitting machine dealer and a knitwear designer. She was a member of numerous civic and community organizations and served as a board member of each one. Mrs. Carriger was preceded in death by her husband, Herman D. Carriger and her son-in-law, Jack C. Gordon, two brothers and one sister. She is survived by two daughters, Marla D. Carriger and her husband, Daniel G. Buie, and Lucy Carriger Gordon; three grandchildren, Christopher Gordon, Matthew Gordon and Kelsey Gordon, all of Johnson City, TN. The private graveside committal service will be held at Monte Vista Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from noon to 2:00 P.M. on   Friday, July 17, 2009 from the East Parlor of Appalachian Funeral Home. Lavinia Bowers

Lavinia Bowers died at 10:00 p.m. on  July 11th at the Johnson City Medical Center. She was a life-long resident of Johnson City. She was the daughter of the late Hugh and Winifred Bowers. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Hugh Bowers. She is survived by several cousins and friends. Miss Bowers attended public school in Johnson City and attended East Tennessee Teachers’ College from 1935-39 where she earned a B.S. Degree. She attended  Northwestern  University from 1947-51 where she earned an  M.A. Degree. She attended the University of Colorado and the University of  North Carolina for doctorate work. Miss Bowers had taught in the Johnson City Public School System from 1939-63. She became a tenured professor in the English Department of East Tennessee State University during the years from 1964-82 at which time she took retirement. She worked for the U.S. Navy Department in Washington, D.C. during the years of 1944 and 1945. She became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in 1929. She had taught Sunday School Classes to many age levels and was an active member of the First Presbyterian Women where she conducted Bible Study in the Ann King Sunday School Class and Circle 2 for many years. She was a long-time member of the University Women’s Club and other professional organizations. The funeral service for Miss Bowers will be conducted Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at 2PM at the Monte Vista Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel. Interment will follow. The service will be conducted by Gerald Malcolm and Pat Gagan, who will present “A Time of Remembrance”. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 105 South Boone St. or to The River, a church related organization benefiting women and children.


Edwin Douglass Cantler

Edwin Douglass Cantler, age 83, 1411 Rotherwood Dr., died Friday, July, 10, 2009, at Continuum Courtyard of Johnson City following a lengthy illness. Mr. Cantler was a native of Winchester, KY, and a son of the late Earl Augustus and Mattie Hoke Cantler. He was a graduate of the University of Kentucky and a veteran of the U. S. Navy, having served during WWII. Mr. Cantler retired from the T.V.A. after 37 years of service as an engineer. Mr. Cantler was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church, where he had served as business manager. He was also a member of the Solon Gentry Sunday School class. Mr. Cantler is survived by his wife, Gladys Q. Cantler, of the home; three sons, Edwin D. Cantler Jr. and wife Jenina of Memphis, Fredrick Q. Cantler and wife Katrina of Cullowhee, NC, Robert Wade Cantler and wife Dianna of Johnson City; one daughter, Sara Cantler Hansen and husband Mark of Collierville, TN; grandchildren, Natalie Canter and husband Matthew, Andrew Cantler, Mary Emily Hansen, Michael Cantler, Clay Cantler, Palmer Cantler, Ann Caroline Hansen, Quentin Cantler, and Gray Hansen. The funeral service for Mr. Cantler will be conducted Monday, July 13, 2009, at 11AM in the Sanctuary of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Brian Taylor and Rev. Michael Lester officiating. The graveside committal service will follow in Monte Vista Memorial Park. Julius C. Ferrell

Julius C. Ferrell, Johnson City, TN, born March 10, 1911 at Vulcan, West Virginia, went to be with the Lord Monday, July 6, 2009, surrounded by his wife and family members. Julius grew up in the hills of West Virginia and Kentucky, the son of a Church of Christ minister. He traveled with his Dad and was his song leader. His love of music stayed with him his entire life. He and his three brothers formed a gospel quartet, singing throughout the region at churches and conventions. He directed the choirs of several churches. He taught singing school using shaped notes and taught Sunday school. That’s where he met his bride of 75 years. He worked in the coal mining industry and conducted many classes on mine safety for different coal companies. He eventually taught Mine Safety at Pikeville College in Pikeville, KY and published a book on Mine Safety. Julius was a longtime member of First Christian Church and the Mr. & Mrs. Sunday school class in Johnson City, TN. Julius was an avid hunter, fisherman, camper, gardener and lover of life. He was a good family man, a devoted husband, father and grandfather and he loved God and the church. Julius was a faithful servant to the end. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nelson and Alvania Mounts Ferrell; three brothers, Robert, Fred and Henry; three sisters, Kelsie Hatfield, Grace Cooper and Elsie Hurley; one grandson, David Franklin Ferrell and one son-in-law, Dennis W. Greenwell. Survivors include his wife, Rebecca M. Ferrell; daughter, Lois J. Greenwell, Johnson City; son, Bill F. Ferrell and wife, Sandra, Stafford, Virginia; sister, Dessie Ferrell Harbour, Salt Rock, WV; grandchildren, Brian Greenwell and wife, Kim, Johnson City, Brenda Petersen and husband, Howard, Jonesborough, Rebecca Swift and husband, John, Manassas, VA, Kevin Greenwell and wife, Sherrie, Johnson City; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mr. Ferrell will be conducted at 7:00 PM Thursday, July 9, 2009 at First Christian Church with Dr. Tim Wallingford, Minister officiating. The graveside interment will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday, July 10, 2009 at Washington County Memory Gardens. Frances Agnes Atkins

Frances Agnes Atkins, 95, a resident of Appalachian Christian Village, died at Mountain States Health Alliance Hospital on Sunday night, July 5, 2009. She was born on September 30, 1913 in Vincennes, Indiana, the first child of Oliver and Hazel Johnson Atkins. She professed belief in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized into Him at the age of nine. She became a longtime member of Reel Avenue Christian Church in Vincennes, where she taught a singles’ Bible study class for a number of years. Upon moving to Johnson City in 1970, she became a member of First Christian Church where she sang in the choir and taught a women’s Bible study class for years. Ms. Atkins was a graduate of Vincennes Business College. She served as secretary at Brown Shoe Company in Vincennes for years, as secretary to the president of Johnson Bible College in Knoxville for a short time and as secretary to the president of Emmanuel School of Religion for a long number of years. She was preceded in death by her parents; her half brother, Emerson Atkins of Detroit, MI; her brother, Howard Atkins of Millheim, PA; and her sister, Glenn Grigsby of Mooresville, NC. Survivors include her sister and brother-in-law, Lorraine and Delno Brown of Johnson City, and a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial service for Ms. Adkins will be conducted at 7:00 PM Thursday, July 9, 2009 from the Chapel of Appalachian Christian Village with Dr. Bruce Shields, Minister officiating. Ellen Marie Onks

Ellen Marie Onks, 81, Johnson City, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at Lakebridge Health Care Center. A native of Washington County, she was a daughter of the late Toy Lee and Estella Hodges Saylor. Mrs. Onks was a member of Walnut Christian Church and the Johnson City Senior Center. She was a graduate of Science Hill High School and retired from Klopman Mills after 52 years of service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Onks and a brother, Ken Hartsell. Survivors include a son, Gary W. Onks; daughter, Carol Pierce, both of Johnson City; brothers, Clarence Saylor, Cleveland, Ohio, Wayne Saylor, Claremont, North Carolina, E. D. Saylor, Toy Lee Saylor, Jr.; sister, Ruby Tapp, all of Johnson City; grandchildren, Ivy Painter and Daniel Onks; great-grandchildren, Owen and Kinley Painter and several nieces and nephews. John Todd Howren

John Todd Howren, 1312 E. Oakland Ave, Johnson City, passed away Monday, June 29, 2009. Born February 27, 1967, he was a native of Johnson City and a son of John Howren and Margaret Lyle Miller. Todd was a graduate of Science Hill High School and had attended East Tennessee State University. Todd excelled in tennis while in high school being named All Conference each year and Conference MVP twice. He qualified for the state tournament each year with the coach he admired, Mike Voitlein. Todd was employed by an oil company in management. Survivors include a son, Peyton; daughters, Mya Alexandria and Katherine "Reese" Howren; mother, Margaret Miller and husband, Gary; father, John Howren and wife, Vicki; brother, David Howren and wife, Nancy; half-brother, Dustin Howren and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. The graveside service for Mr. Howren will be conducted at 2:00 PM Thursday, July 2, 2009 at Monte Vista Memorial Park with Rev. Donald Muncie officiating. Geneva L. Lewis

Our Beloved, Geneva L. Lewis, age 68, 409 Jena Beth Dr. Apt.B, Elizabethton, went home to be with our Lord on Saturday, June 27, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer. Geneva Lewis was a retiree of American Water heater where for 36 years she devoted her life’s work to the United Steel Workers and to helping people. She was a strong activist and mentor to many Union officers and stewards. In 1970, she helped to organize the first Union at American Water Heater (TN Tank), negotiate and hand write its first contract. Also in the early 1970’s Geneva, along with two other women, formed the Upper East Tennessee Central Labor Council where she remained an officer and lifetime member. She was the first woman to be inducted into the UETCLC Hall of Fame. Following her retirement she helped to charter SOAR (Steelworkers Organization of Active retirees) chapter 9-5 and was its president. Her passing leaves a void no one will ever fill. She will always be remembered for her strength, leadership, and unfaltering faith in the Labor movement. Geneva’s Union spirit will live forever in the legacy she leaves behind. We will miss you Geneva Our Mother in the Union, our sister in Christ. She is preceded in death by her mother, Lula Howell Estep and father, Lee Roy Estep; three brothers, Jr. Estep, J.D. Estep, Bill Estep; one sister, Ruby Estep. She is survived by one sister, Geanette Finley of Johnson City; one brother, George Estep and wife Jan of FL; one son, Michael Furches and wife Mary Jane of Wichita, KS; one daughter, Andrea Zeh of Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Christopher Welch, Zachary Welch, Marathana Furches Prothos, Joshua Welch, and Nathaniel Furches; one great-grandchild, Leonard Avram Welch, several nieces and nephews and her Union brothers and sisters. We would like to express our sincere thanks to the staff of the Christian Care Center of Johnson City, Caris Hospice, and Local Union 7739 for their compassion and care. Wilbur Lee White

Wilbur Lee White, 64, died Sunday, June 21st at his residence. A native of Johnson City, he was a son of the late Ben and Nona White. Mr. White was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church. He was a carpenter. Survivors include a daughter, Teresa Ann White; sons, Kenneth Wayne, Wilbur Lee, Jr., Nathan White, all of Johnson City and Wilbur Lee, Jr., Atlanta, Georgia; 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Special friends, Sharon White, Faye Phillips, and Norma White. The graveside  service for Mr. White will be conducted at 2:00 PM Thursday, June 25, 2009 from at Taylor Cemetery, (Central Community, Carter County). Phyllis Jean Rayfield

Phyllis Jean Rayfield, 47, Johnson City, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, June 14, 2009 at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. A native of Johnson City, she was a daughter of Mary R. Lawing and the late James P. Rayfield. Ms. Rayfield was a homemaker. Survivors, in addition to her mother, include a daughter, Mary Diane Rayfield; son, James Isaac Rayfield; brother, Billy Joe Paul, all of Johnson City; sister, Brenda Kay Knewell, Unicoi; grandchildren, Mary Nichole Thomas, Kayla Marie Thomas, Asia Tybree Thomas, Nathan Alexander Hartley, Melony Alexis Hartley, one unborn grandchild; step-daughter, Sara Vines; step-grandchildren, Samantha Cross, David Norris, Jr., Jeffery Cross; nephew, Travis Nelson and special friend, Phoenix Brown. Fred Thomas Lyons

Fred Thomas Lyons, 69, Johnson City, passed away Friday, June 12, 2009 at Asbury Center. Mr. Lyons was a native of Unicoi County, Tennessee. Mr. Lyons was a member of Princeton Freewill Baptist Church. He retired from the City of Johnson City after 32 years in the Sanitation Department. He was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters.   Survivors include his wife, Dolly Lyons, of the home; two sisters; one brother and special friend, Keevaann Humphrey.    The funeral service for Mr. Lyons will be conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday, June 14, 2009 from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Rev. Cloyd M. Walker

Cloyd M. Walker, 93, of Johnson City, passed away Friday, June 12, 2009 at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. He was a native of Johnson City and the son of the late Clyde and Bonita Walker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim and Harry Walker; sister, Elaine Hurley and sisters-in-law, Carolyn Jaynes and Beverly Walker McAfee. He graduated from Science Hill High School in 1932 and attended University of Alabama, majoring in Electrical Engineering. He married in December 1942 to Sara Collette. In early 1943, he was deployed in the Army in the 96th Mortar Battalion, serving in Central Europe under the command of General George Patton. He received the World War II Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Service Star, American Theater Ribbon, American Defense Ribbon and a Good Conduct Medal. After being discharged, he joined his father, mother and siblings in Walker Bros Ice & Coal business as manager. He was an accomplished ice carver, making punch bowls electric signs frozen in them, huge gazebos for weddings, replica of Holiday Inn, a giant telephone for a phone convention (just to mention a few) all carved out of 300 pound blocks of ice using a small chisel. Sunday’s were spent with his family going to church at Central Baptist and at family outings. He also enjoyed writing poetry. After retiring from the Ice & Coal business in the late 1970’s, he went to work for the Austin Tobacco Company for two years. He was a volunteer at the Red Cross Blood Mobile for several years, joined a senior group at Northside Hospital and spent a week helping out at the Summer Special Olympics at Notre Dame in the 1980’s. For five consecutive years, he spent two weeks at Fontana, North Carolina at a camp for high school students-teaching and sharing with others. He taught a primary group at church and was very active in Sunday School class. Cloyd was a lifetime deacon and usher at Central Baptist Church and also held the office of President of the Brotherhood. He was a volunteer at Northside Hospital for the past seventeen years greeting people and assisting with admissions. He worked with skilled nursing facility patients, and also participated each year in fundraising projects. He participated in two television documentaries for MSHA, which aired on WJHL-TV. He was very active in International Civitan Club. He had 35 years perfect attendance and held all offices including District Governor for four years. One of his favorite times was working at the Civitan Snack Shack during the Appalachian Fair. His home is full of plaques and awards honoring him for his service with Civitan. Included is certification of Cloyd as an honorary citizen of the city of Toronto, Canada, for helping with young people at the Snowdo Convention. He received the First Humanitarian Award two years running and had been often recognized for raising money for Special Olympics. In 1989, he was honored at a special ceremony in Knoxville and presented as a Fellow by Civitan International for his lifetime of dedication to the organization. He will be greatly missed by many and his winning smile, great sense of humor and love of people will always be remembered.  Cloyd is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Sara Collette Walker; daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Harmon Duncan, Johnson City; son, Mike “Travis” Walker, Knoxville; grandsons, Bryan and Preston Walker, Knoxville; granddaughter, Terri Jaggers and husband, Eric, Jacksonville, Florida; great-grandsons, Colton and Jett Jaggers. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mr. Walker will be conducted at 1:00 PM Monday, June 15, 2009 from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Dr. Ronald Murray officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain Home National Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by Boone Dam V. F. W. Post 4933. Active pallbearers will be J. W. Bailey, Jim Bussen, Harmon Duncan, Harry Harman, Jimmy Jaynes, John Karter, Bryan Walker and Preston Walker. Jean Campbell Renfro

Jean Campbell Renfro, 79, 1107 Ronald Lane, Johnson City, passed away Tuesday, June 02, 2009 at Johnson City Medical Center. Who served as an inspiration of courage and strength at last has been granted peace.   Though nothing can bring back the hour of splendor in the grass, of glory in the flower, we will grieve not; rather find strength in what remains behind. Mrs. Renfro was a member of East Pine Grove Park United Methodist Church. Mrs. Renfro was a daughter of the late Austin and Pearl Campbell. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Harold D. Renfro; her loving brother, Billy Joe Campbell of Pennsylvania and Francis Riddle of Johnson City. Survivors include her two daughters, Lana Renfro and Pat Looney and her faithful constant companions at home, Mr. Prissy and Rudy, who will be lost without their Mama. Other survivors include Ruby Hunter and husband, Robert, Adrian, Michigan; Edna Bootle, Clinton, South Carolina; Lou Ellen Taylor and husband, Wayne; Joan Williams, all of Johnson City, Delores Castle, Amory, Mississippi; Larry Campbell and wife, Nora, Johnson City and Nancy Campbell, Pennsylvania. Jean had several nieces and nephews. She leaves a host of extended family and friends and one very special cousin and supportive friend, Norma Burgess. For 34 years, she was known as Mama Jean to Buddy, Jessica, Harris, Bella and Erin Looney and Steve and Paige Hogan. She spent her last few days becoming mother to so many. No staff member was untouched during her illness. And all loved her as she truly did them. But the nursing staff of 2300/2500 will always have our deepest gratitude and love for the care and love they gave her daily. Our Mom became their Mom-thank you. James W. Sweet

James W. Sweet, 90, Damascus, Virginia, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2009 at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center following a brief illness. A native of Damascus, Mr. Sweet was a son of the late John and Buena Vestal Sweet.    Mr. Sweet was a Veteran of the U. S. Navy having served his country in World War II. He retired from Bill Gatton after 35 years of service. Mr. Sweet and his wife, the late Lala Sweet, were devoted members of the VFW Lodge #6975 in Bristol, TN for over 35 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lala Willis Sweet in 2008 and two brothers. Survivors include a sister, Mabel Milhorn, Damascus and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service for Mr. Sweet will be conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Boone Dam VFW Post #4933.


Roxie Catherine Thomas

Roxie Catherine Norton Thomas died on May 27, 2009 after a long, happy life. She was born in Medicine Mound, Texas, on July 12, 1915. She was the youngest of eight siblings and always felt very privileged to be in a Christian family. She does not remember ever not loving Jesus and she was baptized into Him when she was 11 or 12. Serving Him was always her passion, and she never wavered in that. Roxie followed her siblings to Abilene Christian College where she met Harold Thomas. They were married August 23, 1934 and remained married 72 glorious years, serving Christ together. They served churches in Fort Worth and Gilmer, TX, Brookline, MA, Providence, RI, Danforth and Bangor, ME, Groton, CT, Atlanta, GA, Los Angeles, CA, and in Conway, AR for 28 years. In 1942 Harold took his family to Boston to further his education. They planned to go to the Orient from there, but New England grabbed their hearts and became their mission. They spent 25 years planting churches in the New England states. Roxie was always a servant. Her home was open to any and all who might need a meal or a place to stay. She had the gracious gift of hospitality, blessing hundreds of people who crossed the path of the Thomases. Roxie and Harold were powerful co-workers in Christian ministry. After serving churches in New England, they moved to Philadelphia to help establish Northeastern Christian College, now Ohio Valley University. Roxie worked as a public school teacher in Danforth, ME, a social worker in Bangor, ME, and a professional Girl Scout in Groton, CT. Upon moving to  Los Angeles, Roxie served as the chief administrator at Pepperdine University’s word processing center. She also typed and edited Harold’s two Biblical novels. Roxie is preceded in death by her beloved husband Harold, and by her seven siblings. She is survived by her five children, Dr. Robert Harold Thomas and wife, Martha of Blacksburg, VA, Dr. James Donald Thomas and wife, Mary Sue of Pasadena, CA, Rosemary Ann Thomas Farmer and husband, Mel of Johnson City, TN, Dr. Ted Norton Thomas and wife, Jane Anne of Johnson City, TN, Margaret Elaine Thomas Harris and husband, John of Boulder, CA. They had 24 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren. To the very end of her life, Roxie began every day with the prayer that God would give her something to do which would bring Him glory. Her life, as well as her death, were a lovely demonstration of victory in Jesus Christ. She will be buried Wednesday, June 3, in Granbury, Texas, beside Harold after a celebration of her life in the Thorp Spring Church of Christ, at 1 p.m. Memorial gifts can be made to the J. Ray Kaiser Bonin (born June 6, 1951), passed away May 28, 2009. Ray was the son of Peter and Gerri Bonin of Silver Spring, Maryland. Ray was a graduate of East Tennessee State University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1974 and was a member of the Buccaneers baseball team. He went on to a career in health care, and at the time of his passing, was a Quality Assurance Monitor for the State of Tennessee at Greene Valley Development Center in Greeneville. Ray was preceded in death by his brother, John. He is survived by his parents, his wife, Linda Kaiser and his stepson, Ben. A celebration of Ray’s life will be held for friends and family at Down Home, 300 W. Main Street in Johnson City, Monday, June 1, 2009 from 6:00 – 9:00 PM. Those attending are encouraged to bring photographs of Ray, stories to share and musical instruments to play.


Carolyn Sue Copeland

Carolyn Sue Copeland, 61, Johnson City, passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at her residence. A native of Johnson City, she was a daughter of the late Ray and Jean Craig Laws. Mrs. Copeland was a hairdresser. Survivors include her husband, Bobby Copeland, of the home; son Jackie Crumley, Johnson City; aunt and uncle, Joyce and Roy Garland, Johnson City and Betty Goodman, Bristol, Tennessee. The memorial service for Mrs. Copeland will be conducted at 3:00 PM Saturday, May 30, 2009 from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 PM in the East Parlor of the funeral home prior to the service.


Tammy L. Rhea

Tammy L. Rhea, age 43, of 613 Lamont Street, Johnson City, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 25, 2009 at the Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness.  A native of Johnson City, she was a daughter of the late James and Marion Louise Bowman Vanover.  She was an amazing mother to her two daughters and will be greatly missed.  Mrs. Rhea was of the Freewill Baptist Faith.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, James Freddy Vanover and one sister, Kathy Marlene Garland. Survivors include two daughters, Sarah Louise Rhea and Marcy Dawn Rhea, both of Johnson City; one sister, Lisa Gail Davis, Johnson City; four brothers, Gary Wayne Vanover, Jonesborough, Larry Eugene Vanover, Danny Allen Vanover, and Mark Christopher  Vanover, all of Johnson City; previous husband, Mark Alan Rhea, Johnson City; and a special Aunt, Shirley Ann Holden, Johnson City.  Several nieces and nephews and cousins also survive. The family will receive friends Friday, May 29, 2009 from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M.  at Appalachian Funeral Home.  Final disposition will be held at a later date. 


John "Jack" Hendricks

John “Jack” Pendleton Hendricks, 66, Blountville, fell asleep in the arms of his Lord and Savior on May 26, 2009. Mr. Hendricks was a native of Bristol, Virginia, but lived most of his life in Sullivan County. He was a son of the late John Opie and Sue Pendleton Hendricks. Mr. Hendricks was a member of Wheeler United Methodist Church. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy. Mr. Hendricks was a graduate of East Tennessee State University and retired from the Contractor Yard. He was an enrolled agent at H & R Block. Survivors include his wife, Joan Kinkead Hendricks, of the home and a brother, Don Rolson Hendricks and wife, Samantha, Bristol, VA. He is also survived by many loving Pendleton and Hendricks cousins. The funeral service for Mr. Hendricks will be conducted at 1:00 PM Friday, May 29, 2009 at Wheeler United Methodist Church, Blountville with Rev. Stuart Albee officiating. Special music will be provided by Mr. David Earles. Interment will follow at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Mike Earles, Joe Earles, Tim Earles, David Earles, Jim Wiseman, David Pendleton, Bill Lyon, Roy Bowen, Steve Blakely and Bobby Cumbow. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Thursday, May 28, 2009 from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home.


Bernice A. Minutolo

Bernice A. Minutolo (nee Geiger), 86, of Clinton, S.C., died at her home in the arms of her loving daughter Elizabeth on Saturday, May 23. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Mary Schwierjohann Geiger and the widow of her late, beloved husband, Vincent G. Minutolo.  She was the mother of seven, grandmother of eighteen, great grandmother of 13, great, great grandmother of one and friend to all who had the pleasure to know her.  She left the world a better and brighter place in which to live. Surviving are her children Sarina Craig (Bob) of Hatchechubbe, AL, Vincent, Jr. (Linda) of Jonesborough, TN, Mary Meeks (Allen) of Johnson City, TN, Joseph (Kim) of Maryville, TN, James (Margot) of Cincinnati, OH, John of Johnson City, TN, and Elizabeth Minutolo of Clinton, SC; and sisters Lucille Alfing and Mary Ellen Gammill, sister-in-law Maxine Geiger and brother Robert Geiger, all of Cincinnati, OH. The funeral service for Mrs. Minutolo will be held Wednesday, May 27, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Johnson City.  Visitation will begin at 1:00p.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00p.m., with burial at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Mildred Skipworth

Mildred Skipworth, age 91, died at her residence, Pine Oaks Assisted Living, Johnson City, Thursday, May 14, 2009.    She was a lifelong resident of Johnson City, a daughter of the late Mayme and Burr Harrison. Mrs. Skipworth was well known in the area as a piano teacher, as well as organist and pianist at First Presbyterian Church for many years. She was also prominent in the Johnson City Preaching Mission, as she and Mrs. Vivian Ring supplied the piano and organ music for the nightly event. Mildred Skipworth loved her family and her church and never failed to share her musical talent with both the church and her community. She was a very loving and caring person who always met you with a smile. Mrs. Skipworth was preceded in death by her husband, Rodney Skipworth; her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Burr Harrison; and her sister, Mrs. Helen Preston. Survivors include her daughter, Linda Hurt and husband, Tom; a brother, Dr. William B. Harrison and wife, Josephine; 3 grandchildren, Julie Barker and husband, John, David Hurt and wife, Judith, Scott Hurt and great-grandchildren, Drew, Emma and Olivia Barker, Will and Kelli Hurt and many loved nieces and nephews.   The funeral service for Mrs. Skipworth will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, May 17, 2009 at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Louis Imsande and Rev. David Miller officiating. Interment will follow at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be her grandsons, great-grandson and nephews: David Hurt, Scott Hurt, John Barker, Will Hurt, Drew Barker, Frank Preston, Rod McMillon and Will Harrison. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of Pine Oaks Assisted Living and the Seniors Monday Breakfast group at First Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Saturday, May 16, 2009 in the Welcome Center of First Presbyterian Church. Eartha Lee Huggins

Eartha Lee Huggins, 85, of Jonesborough, went to join the heavenly choir, May 1, 2009, following a lengthy illness.  She was a native of Elloree, SC and a daughter of the late Queenie Bostic and George Wells. Mrs. Huggins was a dedicated wife and mother, giving love and comfort to all she embraced. She was educated in the South Carolina public school system and a graduate of the Elloree School System. Soon after, she met and married the late Rev. Walter Lee Huggins, Sr. Mrs. Huggins received Christ at an early age at Brown’s Chapel AME Zion Church, then she attended Shiloh Baptist Church, she then relocated to East Stonewell AME Zion Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev, Walter Lee Huggins, in 1966; two sons, Rev. Walter Lee Huggins Jr., and James Edward Huggins; granddaughter Ya’Kenya J. Huggins; a brother, Nathaniel Johnson, and sister, Elizabeth R. Howell. Survivors include three sons, Alphonso Huggins and wife  Sun-Sil, S. Korea, Alexander Huggins, Charlotte, NC, and Eddie Huggins and wife Debra,  Jonesborough; two daughters, Queen A. Huggins, Johnson City, and Annette Clyburn and husband Richard, Charlotte, NC; seventeen grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held in Charlotte, NC, at a later date.


Nathan W. Sams

Nathan W. Sams, age 48, of 902 E. Unaka Ave., Johnson City, TN, passed away unexpectedly Monday, May 4, 2009 at his residence.  A native of Johnson City he was a son of Virginia Taylor Sams, and the late Nat Winston Sams.  Mr. Sams served in the U.S Navy.  He was preceded in death by his father, and one brother, Jonathan Sams. Survivors including his mother are his wife, Kim Sams, and daughter, Jessica Sams, both of Elizabethton. Unaka Avenue Baptist Church will conduct a memorial service for Mr. Sams on Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at 3:00 P.M. at Unaka Avenue Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Tyson officiating.  The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2:00 until 3:00 P.M. prior to the service at the church. 


Phyllis A. Barnes

Phyllis A. Barnes, age 76, 1202 Weaver Ave. died Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Northside Hospital. A native of Bristol, Tennessee, she was a daughter of the late James Thomas “Buck” and Iva Hendrickson Edwards. Mrs. Barnes was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.   Mrs. Barnes worked at Parks Belk for 25 years. She loved to play bridge. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, John D. Barnes, II in 2009 and a brother, J. T. Edwards in 1984. Survivors include her husband, John D. Barnes, I, of the home; daughter, Julie Britton and husband, Tim; grandchildren, Tab, Andy and Ben Britton and Tripp and Cade Barnes; daughter-in-law, Kimberly D. Barnes, all of Johnson City; sisters, Mariola “Penny” Edwards, Johnson City, Betty Webb, Blountville, Rosalie Price, Boca Raton, Florida; brother, Billy Edwards, Kingsport and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service for Mrs. Barnes will be conducted at 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 5, 2009 from the Mausoleum Chapel at Washington County Memory Gardens with Rev. James L. Bennington officiating. There will be no formal visitation for Mrs. Barnes however; friends may register their presence from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM Monday at the funeral home.
